In late July 2025, a shocking case of hoarded guinea pigs was discovered in a South Los Angeles home. Authorities removed almost 400 guinea pigs from horrible conditions; they had been living among deceased and severely ill guinea pigs, along with countless pregnant females and newborns. The guinea pigs were removed from the home and taken in by LAGPR as well as other rescues across California and the country.

Guinea pigs from the LA 400 first arrived to Maryland via a cross country road trip in early September, and were distributed among a handful of East coast rescues. Many of the females were pregnant, underweight, and very young.Â

The Gaynea Pigs work with two rescues that have taken in some of these pigs - MGPR and Leaps and Squeaks. We began fostering a young girl, Chappell Roan, who we suspected may be pregnant. About a week into her stay with us, pregnancy was confirmed - we could see the baby kicking! Mama delivered a beautiful and happy boy on September 22, 2025.

We are so excited to welcome Chappell and baby Chit! Being able to care for them and be a part of this guinea pig mom and baby’s journey has been such a privilege, and we’ve enjoyed every moment of watching them both grow. That being said, this heart-wrenching hoarding situation never should have occurred in the first place. We can only hope that all of the pigs rescued from this incident find wonderful and loving homes.Â
